In 1977, the first completely assembled personal computers were distributed by Commodore, Apple Computer, and Radio Shack. Within a few years, the PC (personal computer) had become a legitimate mainstream piece of equipment, and was soon appearing in public libraries, schools, and places of business. It was also during this year that the first commercially available local area network (LAN) was developed by Datapoint Corporation, called ARCnet.
